About Learning and Development at The Department of Communities

Overview

Learning and Development (L&D) offers learning and development programs to Department, non-government community organisations funded and endorsed by the Department, and foster carers.

To deliver learning and development programs we use face-to-face, online, flexible and work-based learning methods. Individuals can be provided with learning and development pathways to suit their personal needs.

Catering

If catering is included (please check your workshop registration) please note the following:

  • Gluten Free & Vegetarian dishes are available if requested in advance. If you have other special dietary requirements please bring your own food.
  • Coffee and Tea-making facilities are available with skim, hi-lo and full-cream milk
  • The Learning and Development Centre at Bennett St, East Perth has fridges available if you want to bring your own food and drink.

Your obligations

  • Complete all pre-requisites before attending.
  • Print out and bring along all learner materials (learner guides. handbooks etc.) to the session.
  • Plan to arrive with time to spare so that the training session can start at the prescribed time (allow time for parking etc.).
  • Contact Learning & Development:
  1. if you can't attend the session;
  2. if you are delayed.

Our Policies

  • If your enrolment is accepted you will be sent an appointment email within 2 working days.
  • The appointment email includes the details of the program, facilitator background, venue and parking options.
  • If a program is fully subscribed you will be notified and told when to re-apply for the next scheduled one.
  • We only run programs if we have the minimum number of people enrolled.
  • We will notify all enrolled participants via email if a program is cancelled.
  • Please let us know at least five days in advance if you cannot attend, wherever possible - someone else may be able to take your place.
  • If for some unforeseen circumstance you are unable to attend on the day please call to notify us.

How can I check if I am eligible to participate in a learning and development program?
Contact us if you are unsure about a specific program, but in general we offer programs to Department staff, non-government community organisations funded and endorsed by the Department and foster carers.

Cost of programs

Is there a charge to attend a learning and development program?
No, it is free to eligible participants. 

Times of programs

What time does my course start and finish?
General details, such as times and locality, are published in the calendar.  You will receive more detailed instructions in your appointment email.

Accommodation for Regional Staff

Learning and Development organises accommodation for regional participants of our Child Protection orientation programs.

Generally, we book accommodation from the Sunday (day before training commences) to the following Saturday (the day after training ceases).

Please Note - Participants staying in provided accommodation must abide by the Department's Code of Conduct and maintain a reasonable standard of behaviour at all times.  Failure to do so will result in you being asked to make your own arrangements for accommodation.

Other details:

  • Learning and Development will provide a standard room in a 3.5 star hotel with a continental breakfast.
  • The hotel is located within walking distance of Learning and Development, Bennett Street.
  • Lunch will also be provided, however, your evening meal is your own responsibility.
  • You are able to claim a meal allowance through your District for your dinner.
  • Should this accommodation not meet your needs, you can make alternative arrangements through your District.
  • Any costs incurred for alternative accommodation will be the responsibility of your District and will require your District Directors’ approval.

  • Please Note: Bikes chained out front of Bennett St will be removed
  • Cyclists can use a free bike rack on ground floor of the Wilson carpark on site at 6/8 Bennett St.

Learning and Development facilities

We have four facilitation rooms with permanent multimedia projectors in the ceilings and Smart Boards (interactive whiteboards). Facilitation Room 4 is a fully equipped IT training lab containing 17 fully networked computers.
